Tony Smythe

The Club was saddened to learn of the death of long-standing AC member Tony Smythe. Tony had been a member of the Club since joining the ACG in the 1960s. As well as being the son of noted Himalayan mountainner Frank Smythe, Tony was an accomplished climber in his own right and also a successful author, penning 'My Father Frank' and the iconic 'Rock Climbers in Action in Snowdonia' with fellow AC member John Cleare.

Tony died in Kendal on 24 February. His funeral will take place at 11am on Monday 18th March, at Beetham Hall Crematorium,  Beetham, Milnthorpe LA7 7BQ. All are welcome. Gareth Shellard

We have recently learned that ACG member Gareth Shellard sadly died on 29 January as the result of a climbing accident. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family at this difficult time.

 

 

 

Bernard Newman

The Club was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Bernard Newman. Bernard had been an AC member since 2012 and was a former editor of the Alpine Journal.

There will be a get together in memory of Bernard at The Grouse Inn in Keighley from 12:30 - 17:00 on 18 March.

Mike Mortimer

The club has received news that Mike Mortimer has died following an accident at Murla.

More details will follow.

Denise Evans

Members will be saddened to learn that Denise Evans died on 25 November, peacefully with her family.  Denise was President of the Alpine Club in 1986, the only female President in the Club’s history.

Jonathan Lee

We have recently learned of the death on 8 September of Jonathan Lee.  He had been a member of the club since 1988

Audrey Salkeld

The club has received the sad news that Audrey Salkeld died on 11 October.  Audrey had been a member since 1978 and was made an Honorary Member in 2022 in recognition of her enormous contribution to mountaineering journalism, literature and film.

David Baldock

We are sad to announce the death on 30 September of David Baldock, a member for almost 50 years who contributed a great deal to the club.

Johanna Merz

We are saddened to announce the death on 26 June of Johanna Merz.  She joined the club in 1986 and was Editor of the Alpine Journal from 1992 to 1998

Tom Hornbein

We are saddened to learn of the death of Honorary member Tom Hornbein on 6 May 2023 at the age of 92.

Graeme Nicol

We have learned of the death on 30 April of Graeme Nicol.  He became a member of the ACG in 1959, and on retirement from the ACG. an AC member from 1978.  The funeral will take place on Friday 12th May at 13:15 at the Crematorium at Hazlehead in Aberdeen.

Mark Bicknell

We have only recently learned that Mark Bicknell died last December.  He was a longstanding member who was admitted  in 1957.

Bill Norton

We are saddened to learn of the death on 3 April of Bill Norton, a member since 1992. The Memorial Service will be held at 12 noon on Monday 3rd  July in the hall of Winchester College.  The Funeral is for family and invited friends only.

 

Ron James MBE

We are saddened to learn of the death of Ron James MBE, a member of the Alpine Club since 1974, author of ‘Dolomites West and East’ and founder of Ogwen Cottage.
