The Alpine Club has a proud literary history and it is terrific to see that tradition being carried on strongly into the present, with a number of members among the nominees for the 2021 Boardman Tasker and Banff Mountain Literature Awards.

Both current club President, Victor Saunders, and Associate club member Mick Conefrey have been shortlisted in the Mountain Literature category of the Banff Mountain Book Competition for ‘Structured Chaos’ and ‘The Last Great Mountain’ respectively.

Meanwhile, Alpine Journal Editor Ed Douglas is short-listed for the Boardman Tasker Award for his latest work ‘Himalaya: A Human History’.

We wish all three the best of luck for the judges’ final judgements and regret that Mick and Victor find themselves nominated in the same category, thus preventing the possibility of an Alpine Club triple.

Mick is due to give a lecture on the climbing history of Kangchenjunga at Charlotte Road on the 28 September, drawing extensively on the knowledge gained in writing ‘The Last Great Mountain’. We hope that many of you will be able to join us there.
