The Alpine Club, the world’s first mountaineering club, was founded in 1857. For over 150 years, members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering development and exploration.

Below is a list of Alpine Club Symposia.
Organised by members of The Alpine Club, events focus on the mountains of a particular area, or on a specific aspect of mountaineering. Each symposium runs for a whole day and is typically held at a weekend in the Lake District, North Wales or the Peak District. During the day experts on the subject, including top mountaineers from around the world, give a series of illustrated presentations, creating an event that is both informative and inspiring. Take a look at the impressive list of speakers at recent and forthcoming symposia to see why these events are so popular. The symposia are usually open to members at a discount, as well as non-members.
Symposia are particularly useful for anyone planning an expedition or looking for new places to visit. Many expeditions have started in the bar after a symposium; but be warned: these events can be dangerously inspirational!

Doug Scott was a legend among mountaineers. In her book 'Mountain Guru', Catherine Moorehead uncovers the elusive man behind the obsessive mountaineer, from his rumbustious youth in Nottingham to his formidable global reputation as a mountaineer.
In conversation with Dr Jeremy Windsor, Catherine will discuss Doug's life, legacy and expeditions as well as digging into the process of writing a book about such a well-loved figure.
The book will be available to purchase on the night, so please bring cash if you'd like to pick up a copy.
The talk will be held in The Padley Room of The Sir William Hotel, Grindleford, S32 2HS. If you wish to eat prior to the talk, please place an order with the venue at least 48 hours in advance so that they can cater for expected numbers. The Sir William can be contacted on 01433 631 167.
All are welcome to attend and the talk is free for AC members on production of your AC membership card and students on production of a valid NUS card. Non-members are asked to make a donation of £3 towards the cost of the lecture.
