The Alpine Club, the world’s first mountaineering club, was founded in 1857.  For over 150 years, members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering development and exploration.

With membership, experienced and aspiring alpinists benefit from a varied meets programme, regional lectures with notable guest speakers, reduced rates at many alpine huts, opportunity to apply for grants to support expeditions, significant discounts at many UK retailers, extensive networking contacts, access to the AC Library and maps - and more!

Friday 22 April 2022
The Avon Gorge is Britains Finest & Unique City Crag.

Its curious limestone walls have attracted legions of trad climbers for over 200 years!! JMW Turner is recorded to have made the first recreational ascents here in seeking the best painting vantage points in 1791……

It has a great selection of graded routes from V.Diff up to the high E numbers. Perhaps its greatest attraction is for the historic classic middle grades on the Seawalls, The Main Cliff, The Main Area  and Suspension Bridge Buttress. There is also a small sport climbing region in the New Quarry area too.
Many AC members have made iconic climbs here in the past including Chris Bonnington on “Malbogies”, alas not quite as famous as Coronation Street in nearby Cheddar Gorge.

Martin Crocker, the resident expert has made a superb C.C. guidebook which includes other Bristol City areas as well.

Camping is to be arranged at a site between Bath & Bristol near to the M4 motorway exits, giving basic facilities within walking distance to pub eating and drinking.
Early comers are invited to arrive on the Friday evening. Climbing at the Gorge on Saturday and Sunday, with alternative venues available at Portishead Quarry nearby.
