The Alpine Club, the world’s first mountaineering club, was founded in 1857.  For over 150 years, members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering development and exploration.

With membership, experienced and aspiring alpinists benefit from a varied meets programme, regional lectures with notable guest speakers, reduced rates at many alpine huts, opportunity to apply for grants to support expeditions, significant discounts at many UK retailers, extensive networking contacts, access to the AC Library and maps - and more!

We welcome applications from experienced mountaineers and climbers who have an interest in climbing and exploration in the Alps, Greater Ranges and other wilderness areas. Experienced climbers should apply to become either a Full Member or an Aspirant Member of the Club. In addition non-climbers may apply to become an Associate of the Alpine Club.

Full Membership

A candidate for Full Membership shall have achieved a high level of proficiency and self-reliance, and have demonstrated a commitment to alpine climbing. Typically, they have climbed approximately 20 substantive peaks or routes at an average grade of PD or above in the Alps, or in other ranges or wilderness areas, over at least three seasons. Hard alpine routes and serious climbs in the greater ranges will carry more weight than snow ascents. Ski mountaineering ascents are taken into account, as are contributions to mountain literature, science and art.

Aspirant Membership

Candidates for Aspirant Membership shall have some alpine mountaineering experience, including roped glacier travel and mixed snow and rock climbing to PD grade. Aspirants should have an enthusiasm for the mountains making it reasonably likely that they will qualify for Full Membership in due course.

Upgrade from Aspirant To Full Member

Aspirant members who are now eligible for Full Membership (i.e. a minimum of 20 respectable alpine routes or peaks, or the equivalent of this in other ranges and wilderness) should complete a Full Membership Application for Aspirant Members.

Please download an application form - OpenOffice (.odt), MS Word (.docx) or pdf.

Associateship

Candidates for Associateship should possess an interest in the mountains and the objectives of the Alpine Club, and wish to benefit from its activities. They will have UK summer and winter mountaineering experience and be wanting to take this to alpine level. In addition or alternatively, their interest can be focussed on mountaineering history, literature, art, equipment or science.

Please download an application form - OpenOffice (.odt), MS Word (.docx) or pdf.

Proposers

The Club's rules stipulate that each applicant must have a proposer who has personal knowledge of them and, for full membership, is a full member of the Club.

If you wish to apply and do not know a member to propose your application, we will help you find someone, provided your climbing experience meets the membership requirements.

Next Steps

If you are an active climber, decide whether you should apply for Full Membership or Aspirant Membership, or alternatively apply using the Associateship route.
