In October last year, Derek and five other AC members flew via Kathmandu to the remote hilltop town of Simikot from where they trekked for 5 days to a base camp the Lachama Valley.

After establishing an ABC beneath the tereminal moraine of the south Lachama Glacier they negotiated complex boulder fields in the hope of climbing one or more of the unclimbed peaks in this valley. Defeated by distance and unfavourable conditions they did, nevertheless, explore the upper reaches of the southern glacial spur and successfully climbed the rocky ridge to the west of the Lurupaya Pass before their time finally ran out.
