The Alpine Club, the world’s first mountaineering club, was founded in 1857.  For over 150 years, members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering development and exploration.

With membership, experienced and aspiring alpinists benefit from a varied meets programme, regional lectures with notable guest speakers, reduced rates at many alpine huts, opportunity to apply for grants to support expeditions, significant discounts at many UK retailers, extensive networking contacts, access to the AC Library and maps - and more!

Svalbard and Northern Norway by Janet Johnson
From Tuesday 13 February 2018
To Tuesday 01 May 2018
Tuesday 13 February 2018

Janet Johnson, AC Associate member, will exhibit paintings in oil and watercolour from a trip last year to Svalbard sailing around the main fjord, Isfjord and Gron Fjorden in the 47 foot yacht appropriately named Arctic Light. Also included in the exhibit are a few Janet’s paintings from ski and sail trips completed in previous years in Lyngen Fjord near Tromso.

The exhibition has been designed to include Norwegian treasures from the AC archives of paintings, maps and books not frequently seen by the members. The maps and books since they are more fragile will be displayed in the glass cabinet outside the Library on the first floor.

Painting in Norway while on a sailboat provides Janet with her two favorite themes in one view, the mountains and the sea. A number of the large watercolours are very immediate, as they were started on the boat in freezing temperatures, and are matched by scenes in the small oils, completed back in the studio where greater reflection was possible without the biting cold freezing the paint.
